The Conversation You are Not Having is the One Costing You Most

Every team I work with has one conversation it is not having. It is rarely a secret. People name it in corridors, in one-to-ones, in the ten minutes after the meeting ends. What it never gets is a slot on an agenda, and so it accumulates. ## Why it stays unsaid The reason is almost never courage. It is that the conversation has no obvious owner, no natural moment, and no version where somebody does not lose face. Given those conditions, deferral is the rational choice for every individual and a disaster for the group. ## What it costs The cost is not the problem itself. It is the second-order effect: everyone learns which subjects are out of bounds, and the boundary quietly expands. ## Where to start Name the avoidance rather than the issue. It is a smaller ask, it is harder to argue with, and it almost always opens the door.
